Consider the painting above by that king of kitsch, that French guy ya just gotta love, William Adolphe Bouguereau. Bill knocked this one off in 1879. I came upon this today whilst browsing the Art Renewal site, and I wondered what sort of reaction I'd get if I submitted a modern-day version of this.
I mean, look at what we have here: a very young girl, perhaps eight or nine, looking in a rather come-hither fashion at the viewer. She is covering up herself. By today's standards, this verges on child pornography. It's just mind-blowing how different things were a hundred or so years ago. We think they were just like us, but they drove horse and buggies. Nuh-uh. They were VERY different.
Not convinced yet? Here's another by Billy that should do the trick. Back in his day, everyone (and I mean EVERYone) received a Classical education. They spoke and read Latin. They knew who all the people in the myths were. Like the Oreads, for instance. Apparently, they were, like, a group of Ancient Greek women who could FLY and flew together in what can only be called swarms. Take a gander.
The Art Renewal site helpfully tells us that Oreads were nymphs of mountains and caves. Can you just imagine what those three lecherous satyrs in the foreground are saying right now? "See, guys? I told you there was a whole cave-full of naked babes that come flying out at sundown! Now do you believe me?"
Here's to a happy 2015 for all. Maybe I'll even figure out how to use this journal thing.
How to monetize DA
Have people pay for exposure, similar to Google Adwords. The more I pay, the more page impressions I get, the more people see my work. The current favorites system results in the same images stuck on the front page forever. Using a pay-for-exposure system, DA would not need to charge for membership or run ads, and the front page would always be changing. Not sure if this idea would work, but I thought I ought to at least put it out there. I'm sure a lot of people here would be happy to pay for the huge exposure they'd get.
If anyone knows how to get this in front of the people in charge, I'd appreciate it if you'd pass it along. Honestly, I'
Suggestions for saving Deviant Art from itself
Recently, dA decided to DOUBLE the price of membership, without any explanation. I'm a paying member, yet I received no communication from DA. Maybe it's hidden away somewhere on a forum I don't visit. Whatever. Tin ear marketing and management is the order of the day here.
There's no "good" reason to double the price. By that, I mean there's no good business reason to do it, so I assume that the site is in fiscal trouble. I'm sure the community would pull together to help out, if asked, but the management of this site doesn't work that way. Instead, they aren't up front with us and will no doubt wonder why their loyal members are leaving in
Great Photoshop tut: Matte Painting
Just found this wonderful, really well-done tutorial [ http://cg.creativefan.com/usin…] by Stas Lobachev. EDIT: somehow, the link isn't working. Copyright craziness
Quiz time, kids. Take a look at the following digital painting of mine, titled "A Pear for Magritte."
See anything here that might be a copyright infringement? The image of the pear is based on my own photograph. The crate is based on a stock photo, but I've changed it drastically. Besides, the stock image was royalty free, and, as far as I know, mine to use as I saw fit. Hm. The tabletop wood, same thing. The stones are made up, as is the background.
So given all that, why do you think Zazzle contacted me recently to say they were pulling the image due to copyright infringement?
Give up? The title is the problem. I've used the character s
