Edit: There seems to be some question about my working methods. To whom it may concern: yes, I trace photographs. Does that make my work less impressive to you? Does it make it invalid? Should I be relegated to the Photomanipulator ghetto? My opinion: the end result is what matters. If it looks exactly like a photograph, guess what: it was traced. Look at Ralph Goings, Chuck Close, Richard Estes, etc. Think they don't use a projector? Think again.

If I sound peeved (and I am), it's because this lame "controversy" goes back to my traditional art days. The Artist's Magazine was filled with letters to the editor saying "Tracers aren't artists!"

My goal is to create hyper-real artwork. This is probably a dumb idea, since I'm using a digital tablet. No one is going to believe my work is nothing more than a cut and paste. So be it. I'm painting for myself, no one else.

Hmm. Maybe I'll start a group: Tracers Unite!

Digital painting, done with Photoshop CS5 and Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. 50 hrs. +

Even if you do trace, the closeups show that you have mastered the technique of portraying different textures realistically. Those kinds of details are difficult, if not impossible, to trace. So I support your art

Honestly, the amount of skill it takes to do this "tracing" of yours is off the charts, as far as I am concerned. I could never get results this good. You do a wonderful job, and your art is lovely.

man...I have this thing with tracing. I believe it's cheating. That inner voice says 'you should be drawing it as welllllll'. Except I've found that most of the work AAAAANway..is in the actual rendering. the tracing is just to get the basic proportions right. I've only traced once (in terms of person art) (for commercial deadlines and jobs I don't give a hoot). Also, as you said, other professional artists use projectors (as well as olde masters I'm sure)... so how do I get away from this feeling of tracing being cheating? Hints and tips?

:omg: It is soo difficult to realize that it's a drawing! If you wouldn't have written it in your description I would have thought it is a photo! That's amazing!
